Mohamad Faizal 19 years old was suffering from stage 4 cancer when his mother reached out to Agnes for assistance. Agnes quickly visited Faizal to access the situation he was in. It was very depressing to see Faizal and his mother were struggling without any assistance from the welfare department and other relevant government agencies.
Agnes immediately provided some financial support and food assistance. The following day she arranged for a reclining wheelchair with a toilet bowl. Wheelchair was delivered and that provided some comfort for Faizal.
Agnes gathered all the relevant medical documents and pictures of Faizal and submitted them to BAITULMAL in Lawas Sarawak. She explained to the BAITULMAL officer the condition Faizal was in. The officer immediately called Faizal’s mother and provided some financial assistance within 10 days. On the same day she visited JKM for help of behalf of Faizal’s mother.
Faizal was in critical condition and was rushed to Lawas District Hospital. On 16th March 2021 Lawas Hospital sent Faizal to Limbang Hospital to perform a CT Scan and was brought back to Lawas on the same day.
His condition worsened, and Faizal was discharged. Date 23th March 2021 next appointment was at Miri Hospital and Lawas Hospital arranged an ambulance to transfer Faizal from Lawas to Miri. Faizal and his mother was reluctant to go but they had no choice. Faizal was admitted at Miri Hospital for several days and his condition deteriorated he stopped eating.
Agnes approached YB Dr Teo in Miri to assist Faizal and he immediately assisted.
Faizal was discharged and was ready to be transferred from Miri to Lawas via ambulance but unfortunately the hospital did not perform a COVID-19 swab test. They had to wait a few more days at the Miri Hospital before Faizal returned to Lawas on 5th of April 2021 and was immediately admitted at the Lawas Hospital. He was discharged a day later.
Date 7th April 2021 Faizal was admitted for the last time for breathing difficulty at Lawas District Hospital. Once again Faizal was discharged and returned home. He passed away 16th April early morning.
Agnes visited the family two days later and offered her condolences. It’s heartbreaking to see a young man like Faizal had to struggle without a proper healthcare and the right support such as palliative care here in Lawas Sarawak. Faizal did not qualify for MySalam despite Agnes’s appeal.
Cancer patients like Faizal should not be forced to make the journey to Limbang and Miri. It takes one hour thirty minutes from Lawas to Limbang and five hours from Lawas to Miri. Lawas District Hospital is ill-equipped to handle critical and emergency cases.
Agnes is now assisting a 17 years old cancer patient from Lawas who is now in Kuching with his mother.
